SARS 2026 Filing Season: Final Call for Non-Provisional Taxpayers

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has officially issued a final urgent reminder to all non-provisional taxpayers with outstanding returns to file before the 2026 Filing Season closes today, Friday, 23 October 2026.

If you haven’t submitted your Personal Income Tax (ITR12) return yet, time is running out. Here is everything you need to know about this year’s filing season statistics, digital upgrades, and how to avoid costly penalties.

Key Highlights from the 2026 Filing Season

SARS has reported significant milestones and modernization updates during this year’s cycle:

  • Massive Increase in Auto-Assessments: By 30 September 2026, SARS auto-assessed over 6.9 million returns, marking a 20% increase compared to the previous year, and extended auto-assessments to certain provisional taxpayers for the very first time.
  • Fast Refund Turnaround: Between 1 July and 19 October 2026, SARS paid out a staggering R33 billion in refunds to over 3.1 million taxpayers. Impressively, 85% of these refunds were paid within 72 hours.
  • New Digital Channels: Modernisation efforts continued to expand this season. Taxpayers can now use enhanced eFiling platforms, the SARS MobiApp, and even WhatsApp to receive assessment notices and submit supporting documents.

The Cost of Late Submissions: What Happens If You Miss the Deadline?

Leaving your tax return until the last minute—or failing to submit altogether—comes with financial risks:

  • Administrative Penalties: Late submission of Personal Income Tax returns can attract recurring monthly administrative penalties ranging from R250 to R16 000, depending on your taxable income, until the outstanding return is filed.
  • Penalties and Interest on Debt: Any unpaid tax debt will continue to accumulate interest and penalties.

If you are unable to pay your tax debt in full, SARS advises contacting them promptly to arrange a payment plan rather than ignoring your obligations.
